UN: Sri Lankan Flood Victims In Desperate Straits
The United Nations reports more people displaced by devastating floods in Sri Lanka are returning home now that the rains have stopped and the floodwaters are receding. Nevertheless, UN officials report hundreds of thousands of people are in dire straits and in urgent need of assistance.
The devastating floods, which struck eastern Sri Lanka in mid-January affected about one million people and made more than 400,000 homeless. The victims barely had time to start recovering, when they were hit by a second wave of flooding in early February. This time 1.2 million people were affected and another 400,000 displaced……………… read more

Flood damage: Govt tells IMF it can manage
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said the government of Sri Lanka was confident it could find the resources to deal with flood-related reconstruction, and in the absence of a full estimate of damages caused by the floods that has wreaked over 1.2 million lives, the IMF believed it was too early to reconsider the budget deficit target for this year, which is 6.75 percent of GDP.
The government said it has allocated Rs. 33 billion for related reconstruction efforts but it requires another Rs. 600 million, in additional funds. The UN tried to mobilise the donor community into channelling US$ 50 million in to the flood-effected economy but the response has been too slow, and the IMF Mission Chief to Sri Lanka, Dr. Brian Aitken, said he believed the donor community was reassessing the situation………. read more

National Priority: Human Rights, Food Or Playing Pandu?
A recent issue of The Economist carried a joke about a plump Tunisian dog during the comparatively economically prosperous days under strongman Zine el- Abidine Ben Ali, running across the border to neighbouring Algeria during the bloody civil strife in Algeria in the 1990s and meeting a ragged, starving Algerian dog. The starving Algerian dog had asked the Tunisian dog: ‘What on earth are you doing here?’……………. read more

Flooding in Grief!
For a people wedded to superstition, traditions and astrology, UNP Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe’s reasons for the unceasing and unprecedented rains and floods in Sri Lanka should not surprise anyone. According to him, “God has unleashed rains on the people of Sri Lanka for the wrong-doings of their ruler.” It’s a mythological reason that has often been proffered in modern times when desperation and defeatism have often defied patience for scientific explanation – starting, of course, with ‘ubiquitous and all-embracing global-warming’!President Mahinda Rajapaksa is not the only one to have thus faced the ‘wrath’ of the weather gods…………. read more
